I'm a senior in high school, I do Hair and Photography as well. I am doing a project and it involves researching what I want to do for a career. My question was " How can I successfully own my own hair and photography Business" I Googleed it to see what I got and your name showed. this is an accumulation for just over 30years so don't think its impossible. just be smart when starting out.

6) Did you set up a business plan: A basic plan with allot of desire and getup and go!

7) Did you take any class for hair, photography or business: I was in the graphic arts industry and so allot of study in master painters from the past, learning about light and art design, etc., photography was a required course back then not now, from what I understand.

8) What is the best way to get started: Passion and shoot allot. Study your work and set the goal of higher percentage rate of successful, salable image content, every time you shoot. study and plagiarizer photographers. Something really helpful is become friends with photographers on Facebook. Allot of good work at your finger tips to view and study...

9) Would you recommend this career why or why not : Only if you have a passion, I, at this time, can't think of anything else I would want to do except my passions, I like the creation aspect of anything.

I wouldn't recommend this to a novice as a trade, unless their passion is really strong. but if you can't see the shot when you look through the lens, then don't go into this as a trade, get a job to survive and do this as a weekend warrior photographer (just my partial opinion).

10) How long did it take you to start it up: 5 years to break even, but I was an upholsterer to sustain myself for that period and then I quit and went full time photographer but during that time I honed my craft to be more readily acceptable to the masses (you know, those who have money :)

11) Is it home-based or do you own a separate building: See #5 above.

12) Is it just you or your family too: My wife is the main business operator and everything that she needs to be to keep the studio going, we also have a part time employee. we booth rent our salon, with four chairs.

13) What would be your biggest suggestion for someone who wanted to do this: Passion and additional income (job) to support your desire of getting you career going, or someone who believes in you and are willing to financially support you while you get going.

14) Is the studio and salon set up kinda close (what's the set up of the location): see # 5 above.

15) Why do you prefer owning your own business over working for someone else: My Dad owned his own business, but shadowing someone (established photographer) will give you an edge, I have student come to my studio every semester from the nearby colleges and high schools to mentor.

My question is "How can I successfully own a entrepreneurial business combining my skills in hair and photography?" It will all fall in to place, start shooting your clients as portfolio pieces to shoe hair clients and then expand and have them as photo clients as well! Offer your hair and do makeup to photographer for opportunity to shoot with them and pick their brain, etc...

If you can think of anything else to help me answer this question it would be great! I'm not so sure of what the first steps that I would need to take like financially or anything so any help would be greatly appreciated. =)

Make a Photo Break out of a Frame
This is actually a fairly simple task -- although many of the Photoshop authors make it seem more difficult than it really is. Using logic, the portion of the image to be popped out of the frame must be separated from the original image and raised to a higher level, in front of the frame, while leaving the original photo in tact. This technique works in any image software which has layers.

1. Cut out the image: Using any of the software's selection tools you wish, make an accurate selection of the portion of the image you wish to pop.
In this example we used a combination of the Lasso and Magnetic Lasso to carve out the front of the car. Tip: to save time, cut only the part that will pop out.

Lift the image: Once your selection is accurate, and ready to go, duplicate it onto its own layer by using the "float" command (Cmd/J or Ctrl/J)

You can see the nose of the Jaguar is now on its own layer. (#1 in the layers palette) Note that it's just the nose -- no use to select more than you have to. It will match perfectly with the original image on the background layer and provide a seamless pop-out.

2. Create the Frame: Now, in a new layer, you can create the frame for the photo. Here we simply used a white background with the frame cut out. Layer #2 in the diagram.

At this point you can decorate or modify the frame any way you wish -- textures, borders, etc.
Key Concept: Layer Sequencing. Always remember that the stacking order of your layers affects the final product. As you look at the file, you'll understand that the layers were generated in that specific stack order to achieve the effect -- even though they may not have been created in that order.

Also note that we did all the selection work on a COPY of the background, just in case we flubbed something up, or needed to go back and get more of the image. The "work" layer can be deleted, and the whole image flattened when complete.

It’s easier than you may think to make money as a digital photographer. There are many different ways to make money doing digital photography and here are 15 to get you started.

Method #1 – Selling Stock Photography
Selling stock photography is easier than you may think. Just take some of your best photos and submit them to stock photography sites. They will be reviewed and if it’s a good photo, it will hopefully be accepted. You’ll get paid about $1-2 every time someone uses your photo.

Method #2 – Screensavers
There’s a lot more money in screensavers than people realize. Take a series of photographs along a theme and make your own screensaver. If the photos are good, they’ll do great on screensaver sites or on eBay.

Method #3 – eBay Sellers
Speaking of eBay, eBay can be a great source of business. eBay sellers often have very poor photos of images they sell over and over. Set up a local service photographing eBay items.

One of the more popular ways to work as a photographer. The key to getting wedding photography business is to have a very credible website and profile.

Method #5 – Restaurant Photographer
Restaurants often need photos of their restaurant or their dishes for their menu’s and websites. You can work directly with restaurants or make yourself available to designers who work with restaurants.

Method #6 – Real Estate Agents
Real estate agents need listing photographs of new homes they’re listing. Get yourself a few real estate agents you work with regularly and you could quickly be booked with work.

Method #7 – Insurance Photographer
People are usually required to photograph belongings they’re insuring. Often times they don’t want to bother learning how themselves. By positioning yourself as an insurance photographer, you can do it for them.

Method #8 – Online Dating Photographer
Both men and women often want to have great photos of them taken for online dating profiles. This is a great way to make some quick cash.

Method #9 – Working with Café’s
Café’s would often love to have your art on their wall for free. In exchange, you can post your photos with a price tag on their walls until you get a buyer for your art.

Method #10 – Sporting Events
Local sporting events such as little league games or high school soccer games would often love to have photographers photograph their games.

Method #11 – Church Directories
Churches often want to have photos of their members along with contact information in a booklet called a church directory. You can position yourself as the go to photographer for that.

Method #12 – Make T Shirts
A great way to make money doing photography is to take great photos and put them on T shirts. You can sell these shirts on eBay, on your own website or sell the designs to other T shirt websites.

Method #13 – Craigslist
You can advertise yourself on Craigslist, a free and very popular online classifieds website. Position yourself as a photographer and you’ll be exposing yourself to thousands of people who’re looking for your services.

Method #14 – Portrait Photographer
The portrait business is a big business. You can work with a studio or set up your own practice for doing portraits.

Method #15 – Photo Blogging
People love looking at images. If you continue to take images people like to look at and publish them, you can quickly build up a following.

Now you have plenty of profitable ideas you can use to start making money as a photographer. Whether you want to do it part-time for extra cash or make it your full-time work, there’s plenty to choose from.

I'm beginning to think that there are more diverse photographers photographing everything from individuals, family, weddings, kids, infants, babies, seniors, commercial, etc. in Utah than anywhere else in the US.

There's so much amazing and diverse talent in this geographical area than anywhere else.

Trying to find that one and only photographer that fits your personality and needs and price has got to be the most difficult thing anybody can take on.

Sometimes we rely upon friends and relatives who have recommended a particular photographer. But even then, sometimes that one photographer just doesn't fit the bill.

There's also the consideration of how long one photographer's been in business over another; whether they have 10, 20, 30 years of experience. And how about the equipment they use, whether using film or digital, and the quality of the equipment. How reliable they are producing your order on time, or at all, in some cases.

There are so many different scenarios that you can't really know about. It can be scary. I've heard a lot of horror stories where people still haven't received their wedding photos which were ordered several years ago. Then there's the photographer who just started his business, and you as one of their first new clients, discovered they just went out of business after shooting your wedding. If you're lucky, you haven't had any of these experiences.

I wish I could say what would be the best thing for you to do, but it's a very personal thing. I would suggest that you ask for testimonials, find photographers who have been in business at least 10 years, look at a lot of their current photography, and make sure you like the products that they offer. (Namely the type of albums they use, frames, bound published books, canvas wrap portraits, Christmas cards,etc.) Another thing to consider is that he or she has a studio to shoot in. In Utah we have four seasons and sometimes you can't always shoot outdoors. Now I do know of clients who would have you shoot everything outside no matter what time of year! Of course that's not a bad thing LOL :) Most importantly, make sure you go in and meet the photographer.

With the advent of the Internet, checking photographer's web sites is one of the most convenient things I can think of to help you select a photographer. Looking at their galleries will help you decide if they shoot what you like without having to go to each and every studio.

Hopefully the work is current and consistent with everything he/she shoots and that his best is not just a small percentage of the bulk of his work.

The bulk of my photography found on my web site is current. There are a few images I keep around because they have become more like logos, identifiers, or icons to my business. But most everything in my galleries are within the last two years, so that should give you a good indication of what I am currently shooting.

I'm always looking for new and innovative ways of photographing my clients, so.. the convenience of my studio helps me a lot in the diversity.

Some people think my outdoor portraits are from the canyons when actually they're right here around my studio.

Another little niche that's been an integrated part of my business for over 25 years is the makeovers we do right here in my full-service hair salon. We offer glamour makeover photography.

Every year there are more photographers joining forces in Utah. so finding one that is good and reliable is tough thing to do if you are new to the area. The best way is to ask for referrals and then check them out. You don't want one who is here today and gone tomorrow.

Details of the Recommendation: "Scott took our extended family photos, and our immediate family photos, at the beginning of 2007. He knows how to handle a large group and get fantastic photo results.

We had probably 60 people or so in the extended family shoot. We were able to see immediate photo feedback on the monitors in the studio. The finished product is something I'll cherish for a long time!

Right afterwards, he did a short session with my husband and two little kids. Our one-year-old was tired by that time, and it was a challenge to get a good shot. Scott was patient and allowed her the time to get happy, even shooting some candids while she was wandering a little bit. I ended up purchasing one of the candids because it really captured her personality.

The most challenging part of the process was choosing from among so many good shots. The editing (including head replacements and inserting someone who was missing from the original shoot) was flawless. You can tell that Scott has been in the business for a long time and has surrounded himself with talented staff."
